This year, Sigma Phi Epsilon is participating in Dance Marathon in a way we never have before! Dance Marathon is a 12 hour event where we dance, play laser tag and mini golf, and spend time with kiddos without sitting down! The reason we go 12 hours without sitting is to put into perspective that although the kids do not want to be in the hospital, they cannot leave plavix medication. We may want to sit down because we are tired, but we will have to remain standing. The date is set for Saturday March 1, 2014 and I can not even begin to tell you how excited I am! Dance Marathon raises funds for the Children’s Miracle Network and last year Dance Marathon raised over $100K, in only their second year! Last year, Brother Bancroft-Smith, former Student Body President, cut his hair (over 11 inches!) and shaved his beard for the kids! Our members truly share a devotion and appreciation for this event.
This year, SigEp is partnering up with Dance Marathon and taking an active role in this event called, “The Miracle Cup.” What this entails is we have two kiddos that we have “adopted” and do various things like send them care packages, play games, visit them, and so much more! This year, we have Jackson Ridder and Will Reinart. Jackson Ridder is 10 years old and his diagnosis is Chiari Malformation. Will is 13 years old and his diagnosis Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The goal is to do whatever we can to help them take their mind off of the disease they are faced with. The Miracle Cup will be awarded to the top chapter who participates in events put on by Dance Marathon the most, such as: Tangerine Thursday, hanging out with your kiddo, attending the Big Event and fundraisers, among other events. While winning this Cup would be nice, we are completely not focused on that being our goal. Raising funds and participating in events that we will never forget will be a memory we can all cherish.
We are all so fortunate to live such a healthy life and if we can provide just some sort of relief for the kids, we are glad. Dance Marathon is only in it’s their third year and look forward to this partnership.
